HDMI to component cables that really WORK - with great price! Easy step-by-step tutorial and explanation!
Due to the recent increase in HD output devices that only support HDMI (PS3, Xbox 360, media players) – many people now have got a need in converting video from HDMI to component. There are a lot of products on the market that will let you do that, but you want to know some aspects before making a purchase.
Note that we focus solely on converting HDMI -> component, and not in another direction.
HDMI is digital multimedia standard for transmitting video and audio. The reason for the popularity of HDMI standard is its capability for transmitting both audio and video through one cable. DVI and component standards imply separate cables for audio and video signals.
There was a rapid change from DVI and component to HDMI in this decade. But many people that have bought HD displays with no HDMI input now cannot use their equipment. Note that you only benefit from this conversion if your display can handle 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolutions.
What you need to do before buying is to make sure that the converter will actually work!
HDMI has copy protection protocol called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) that prevents copying of the media. Conversion from HDMI to RGB (component) is not so easy because of HDCP.
Standard HDMI to component cable WILL NOT convert HDMI inputs (with HDCP), you will just see a blank screen. This means that the converters won’t work with dvd’s and blueray.
It MAY work with cable, but only if it is not protected by HDCP. All this sounds disappointing, but there actually is a good solution.
| You need to buy an HDMI to component stripper that removes HDCP information from the signal. This way it can be converted to component and played on TV’s with no HDMI input. This is not a cable, but a device, costs about 80$, but this is the only working solution if you want to watch DVD or blueray discs.
